KAREKARE SURF LIFESAVING CLUB REBUILD PROJECT UPDATE

May 2020 – November 2021

Dear Friends and Neighbours

After 20 years of planning and fundraising the Karekare Surf Life Saving Club will commence the demolition of its present building before beginning the construction of a new state of the art, purpose built surf club and community hub.

The site will be accessed by a new temporary roadway while building is undertaken by Cassidy Construction. It is planned that work will start around the 7 May and take about 18 months. The Club is hoping to open the new building in November 2021. The access road will be returned to a more natural sand surface once works have been completed. Parking will be considerably reduced with the removal of the summer overflow parking which will be required as a set down and preparation area.

We also ask for your patience as there may be short periods of time when vehicle access to Karekare is slower than usual to enable the movement of trucks and equipment.

Please find an overhead plan of the proposed works for the access to the surf club. While you will see an allowance to move suitably cleaned heavy equipment along the stream to access the club site this is unlikely to be needed now.

We had planned to enable continued use of the northern access track to the beach, however due to stream changes and Health and Safety considerations we will no longer be able to. To access the beach while the project is underway, we ask you and Regional Park visitors to use the walking track on the southern side of the stream.

Patrols will be maintained as good as ever during the construction period and during next summer we will operate out of a temporary venue in the valley.
