Clubhouse Grand Opening

On Saturday 24 September after 18 months in the planning and cancelling twice due to Covid the Trusts Karekare Lifesaving Clubhouse finally accomplished their Grand opening of the new lifesaving facilities. It was a special day to thank all those that came on the journey with us over the past 20 years, from just an idea, to a concept, completing the arduous resource consenting and raising $4m to make our dream a reality. Without our major sponsors, the endorsement of local Iwi Te Kawerau Maki and many thousands of hours by our volunteers and paid professionals this would not be possible.

The day consisted of the unveiling of our new Pou, with special thanks to Mihaka Marikena our carver and his family who joined us for the day. Also to Pita Turei, members of Te Kawerau Maki, Linda and Warahi Paki for their blessings on the day. The Right Hon. Phil Goff cut the ribbon to open the building and later a cake to celebrate surrounded by the lifeguards of the future. Guests were invited to join us for a walk through, a group photo and Hangi lunch. We can’t wait to share the wonderful new facilities with our lifeguards and those visiting the beach.
